An industrial technology provider requiring a cloud-connected test and measurement solution for equipment diagnostics and maintenance scheduling.
Develop an end-to-end test and measurement device capable of running in industrial environments, combining sensitive analog and digital electronics, embedded processing, and cloud-based data access for both field technicians and remote managers.
The client needed to streamline industrial equipment testing by equipping technicians with a device capable of running configurable tests on-site, while also enabling managers to remotely access and analyze the data to monitor equipment health and plan maintenance. The system required robust digital and analog electronics, cross-platform software, a ruggedized mechanical enclosure, and reliable wireless communication and cloud integration.
Impact ES–Rhode Island contributed across all aspects of the project:
Electronics Integration: Combined two development boards into a single custom board featuring a multicore TI processor and Altera FPGA. Included USB and Bluetooth connectivity and custom-designed power supplies—low-noise analog supplies delivering micro-amp ripple for sensitive electronics.
Mechanical Design: Created a prototype enclosure using a CNC-modified off-the-shelf aluminum box. To enable Bluetooth signal transmission, a small integrated plastic window was added without compromising durability.
Software Development: Built a cross-platform Qt-based application with dual interfaces—one for field technicians and one for managers. The app ran on Android, Windows tablets, or PCs and connected to the measurement device via USB or Bluetooth.
Cloud Synchronization: Designed cloud integration using Amazon AWS DynamoDB to store test data. The app logged results, synced them to the cloud, and enabled real-time access to historical and current data. Impact ES–Rhode Island developed all cloud interface code.
The client received a fully integrated, cloud-connected test and measurement system. Technicians could perform routine diagnostics efficiently on-site, while managers accessed real-time and historical test data remotely for monitoring and decision-making. The solution minimized delays and improved operational insight.
